The Warrior DietA New Way to Control Weight?I said there, and I reiterate here, that I would not recommend this regime. It is just a habit I adopted over the years that works for me. I have suffered no ill health effects in the more than twenty years I have used this eating plan. Would you believe there actually is someone who recommends one meal a day as a healthy way of eating and weight maintenance? Ori Hofmekler, former Israeli Special Forces soldier, has written a book called, The Warrior Diet His theory is that undereating during the day and overeating at night boosts metabolism, regulates insulin levels and promotes dental health.
He bases this theory on his own personal experiences as a soldier in combat, as well as on how it is believed Roman warriors ate while on campaign. The book also stresses the need for exercise to keep the body in peak form. Specifically Hofmekler advocates exercising with high weights and low reps combined with aerobic work. The goal is to build strength, not bulk, for overall functional fitness. If your lifestyle and stamina are like mine were when I fell into the one-meal-a-day habit, it might work for you too. I never have been a breakfast person. My body likes to get up and moving before I put any food into it. I work out vigorously from 8:00 to 9:00 five mornings a week and still have energy to get through the day without any hunger pangs or cravings. I used to eat lunch with my co-workers but over time, got so caught up in my work that I started eating at my desk. I wasn’t enjoying the meals at my desk; I thought I was just giving my body the fuel it required. I began eating less and less and found I didn’t even miss it. The pounds started melting away. At the same time, I found I was enjoying my evening meal substantially more. I didn’t need to count calories. I could have whatever I wanted and enjoy it at a leisurely pace. The dinner hour turned into an hour and a half of unadulterated pleasure that I look forward to each day. I hardly ever eat junk food any more because I’m not eating on the run. I’ve discovered foods I had never even tasted: fresh, whole, wholesome foods. I guess the Sonoma and Mediterranean styles of eating appeal to me so much because of their emphasis on these same wholesome foods and on making each meal a celebration.
