Now Heidi McIndoo, M.S., R.D. has released a new book called The Pocket Idiot's Guide to Superfoods. The Pocket Idiot’s Guide to Superfoods covers 30 high-nutrition, disease-fighting foods. Not surprisingly, you’ll find most of the Sonoma Diet Powerhouse foods in the bunch.
The Editor’s Review says, “With the fading novelty — and declining popularity — of such fad diets as South Beach and Atkins, many people are turning to sensible, moderate eating habits. Along with this trend is an interest in superfoods, those foods that not only nourish the body, but also help fight disease. This pocket guide covers 30 disease-fighting, healthful superfoods and provides simple explanations of how they work.” Ms. McIndoo has 13 years experience as a dietitian. You might recognize her name because she writes frequently for Fitness, Shape, and Self . She has also had articles published in and Woman's Day Specials: Eating Light and in Better Homes and Gardens cookbooks. This is a handy little book to have on hand.
The World’s Healthiest FoodsHeidi McIndoo’s The Pocket Idiot's Guide to Superfoods is kind of the “Cliff Notes” scoop on nutrition-packed foods.
I also want to tell you about the “War and Peace” version. George Mateljan’s
The World's Healthiest Foods, Essential Guide for the Healthiest Way of Eating The book weighs in at 880 pages. It is beautifully done, with tons of mouth-watering photos and over 500 Mediterranean-style recipes, most of which take seven minutes or less to prepare. It focuses on what George calls “the World's Healthiest Foods”, 100 delicious foods that are nutrient-rich, providing the maximum number of nutrients for the least amount of calories. I have used George Mateljan’s non-profit website, whfoods.com, to do nutritional research for ages and have great respect for the man. I was just delighted to get my hands on his encyclopedic book and am working my way through the treasure trove of health-promoting and delicious recipes. Here’s just one sample: George’s recipe for Super Carrot Raisin Salad. Shred 2 or 3 medium carrots. Add ½ cup each raisins and chopped pineapple. Toss with 3 T. extra virgin olive oil and 1 T. fresh lemon juice. Season to taste with sea salt and pepper.
