Skin Care Advice from Dermatologists
What the Pros Do for Themselves
What Do Dermatologists Use on Their Own Skin After Age 40?
Prevention Magazine published and excellent piece by writer Amy Keller for which she interviewed 13 well-known female dermatologists about what they personally use for skin anti-aging.
The doctors were all Age warriors over 40, so they speak from personal as well as professional experience.
The derms recommended products ranging from Vaseline Petroleum Jelly to SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic, illustrating that you can spend a ton on anti-aging skin care - or not.
Some of the simplest advice was to use gentle cleansers like Good Skin Soft Skin Creamy Cleanser or Dove Beauty Bar. Avoid acidic soaps which strip away the skin's natural oils.
Use moisturizers containing skin-identical silicones (e.g. dimethicone or cyclopentasiloxane) like Olay Regenerist Daily Regenerating Serum. Silicones act like a primer to soften fine lines. They seal in moisture and leave a silky feel.
Save heavy repair creams for night (three picks mentioned: Neocutis Bio-restorative Skin Cream REM Super C Serum, La Roche-Posay Active C and Obagi Professional-C).
If you can tolerate them, start using retinoids at night in your 40s if not before.
Dr. Francesca Fusco, assistant clinical professor of dermatology at Mount Sinai School of Medicine said, "It's medically proven that retinoids are the strongest thing you can use to slow the aging process - they diminish fine lines, increase cell turnover to give a youthful glow, and lighten brown spots."
Try Retin-A, Renova or RoC Retinol Correxion Deep Wrinkle Serum.
Be sure to include topical antioxidants like Vitamins C and E, green and white tea and/or Idebenone.
Consider Topix Replenix CF Cream, SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic or Kinerase Cream (which contains both antioxidants and silicone).
The doctors also talked about promoting skin beauty from the inside out. Take your daily vitamins and supplements.
The doctors' picks were Omega-3s which help defend against cell damage and assist in repair,
Vitamin C (1,000 mg) and minerals for "cell signaling, buffering acids and energy transfer" (as found in Dyno-Mins Multi-Mineral tablets).
So there you have it - straight from the Age Warrior doctors' mouths.
