Skin Care for MenAt Least Some Men Are Getting into the Skin Care Thing
Most men could care less about moisturizing their skin, exfoliating dead cells or repairing the lines and wrinkles of aging with skin care products containing effective ingredients like copper peptide or Retin-A. For the most part, cosmetic manufacturers have recognized this bias and have done little to market their skin care for men. This is beginning to slowly change and, for some men at least, taking care of their skin and preventing the signs of aging is becoming more important. One reason for this is the never-ending emphasis on youth, especially in the white collar work place. While they will never acknowledge it, I believe that many employers would prefer to retain male employees who exude health and vigor over the tired looking and/or overweight ones.
Watch the business news. How frequently do see an overwieght, tired-looking, baggy eyed CEO? In this era of white collar downsizing, you want to do everything you can to retain your position. Skin care for men can help. There is also a blurring of gender roles and attitudes that seems to make male skin care not only an acceptable, but normal part of daily life. So you now see men in salons getting facials and pedicures. Hair coloring is getting more prevalent. And countless millions are spent each year by men for various hair preservation and replacement products – Traditionally, this was the primary sign of apparent aging that most men cared about.
There are now companies that specialize in skin care for men, such as Menscience and Zirh. Teaming up with athletes and other celebrities, they are trying to make their state-of-the-art men's skin care products acceptable to the vast majority of men who previously wanted nothing to do with them.
![]() Men’s skin is typically thicker and richer in collagen and elastin. Men’s skin also generally contains more sebaceous glands, which make it oilier. Because of this, men's akin tends to have the ability to age more slowly and better than that of women. But age it does. Dark circles, bagginess under the eyes, dryness due to sun exposure and lines and wrinkles, especially on the forehead and around the eyes and mouth and “turkey neck” all become visible sooner or later. Men are just as prone to sun damage as women and should use a SPF 15 or better sun screen, even if they spend all their time in an office. Lots of damaging UV rays penetrate the glass. Men should also clean their face daily in order to keep those sebaceous glands open and prevent acne and blackhead build up. Moisturizing the skin after shaving, rather than applying alcohol based after-shaves, will keep men’s skin more supple and younger looking. As with women, intake of water is necessary to keep the skin moisturized. It is all the more important if you drink alcoholic beverages. Good diet and exercise not only help to prevent aging from the inside out, but also keep you looking more youthful and energetic.
