Step Up Your Skin CareYour Skin Needs More Support As You AgeStep Up Your Skin Care for Good HealthAs you age, your skin needs more support for maximum health.
Here’s a brand new type of stair-climbing exercise for you to keep your skin in tip-top shape. Understanding the “Step Up Your Skin Care” concepts can help you devise a suitable anti-aging skin care regimen for yourself – whatever your skin’s age. If you have any medical skin conditions, please see a doctor. If what you are battling is “normal” skin aging, please read on.
How Many Skin Care Products Can (or Should) One Person Use?The short answer is, “However many your skin’s condition tells you it needs.” Pick products with only the ingredients you need – no more, no less. Select the best ingredients you can find in each class. There are some wonderful combination products that cover several of the skin care “Steps”. These have been specially formulated so that the active ingredients are in the right proportions and work well in combination.
Let’s K.I.S.S.By that I mean “Keep It Simple Smartie”. You’re smart enough to figure this out. Keep your skin care routine as simple as you can while still meeting your skin’s needs. Don’t overdo; don’t get overwhelmed. When I was selling Avon and Mary Kay, I met many frustrated clients who didn’t know how to come up with good anti-aging skin care programs. They were confused by the plethora of new products and promises. Some had cabinets full of partly used creams and lotions which hadn’t lived up to their hype or were shoved aside for the new improved latest miracle version. Others stopped trying new products altogether because they became skeptical that anything new could work any better. They had been misled too many times. Still others continued the fight against skin aging by slathering everything they could afford to buy on their skin – not realizing they might be doing more harm than good. Ingredients can interact in unintended ways or dilute each other’s positive effects. Here’s a simple way to help you determine what type of products you need to add to your skin care routine as you age. We age at different rates. Genetics, environmental factors and lifestyle all play a role. Therefore the ages in the Step Up chart are only approximate.

Why We Need to Step UpWe need sun protection from day one whenever we are in intense sun for more than 15 minutes a day. That’s the amount of sun exposure that triggers the epidermis to produce the vitamin D we need for bone health.Beyond that minimal amount, UV radiation is unequivocally damaging to the skin. It causes sunburn and premature skin aging. Dermatologists tell us that UV radiation causes 80% of the physical signs of skin aging. Every bodily function or process reaches a peak at some point and then starts an inevitable decline. The skin is the body’s largest organ and its primary barrier against infection and other types of damage. Keeping our skin as youthful as possible is not mere vanity. It is a matter of basic health. Regardless of age, evaluate where your skin is on the skin care Steps. Is it still moist and line free? All you need is sun protection and perhaps a moisturizer in dry weather. When your skin begins to feel dry all the time, add richer and richer moisturizers. Do you detect the beginning of crows’ feet around your eyes when you look in a magnifying mirror? Is there redness around your nostrils – the start of spider veins? You need to supply antioxidants to help the skin stave off free radical damage and maintain vein flexibility. Can you see the crows’ feet without a magnifying mirror? Add exfoliants to your routine. Try the OTC alpha- or gentler beta-hydroxy acids. If you feel you need something stronger, ask your dermatologist about Renova. That’s Retin-A in a moisturizing base for mature skin. Are the crows’ feet visible all the time and not just when you smile or squint? Those lines need plumping from the inside out. Add peptides that stimulate collagen production. Does your face look like it is falling? Do you see jowls and overall slackness? Is your neck starting to look crepey? Add peptides that fight glycation damage – the stiffening of existing collagen fibers and loss of resilience. Of course there is only so much that topical anti-aging products can do. Have realistic expectations. Choose your products for the ingredients they contain not for the marketing hype and promises.
