Quasar Baby - aka Baby Quasar - Review

My Experience with the Quasar Baby

[ Note that Quasar Baby and Baby Quasar are used interchangeably - but the proper name is Baby Quasar.]

After reading in Dr. Nicholas Perricone's latest book, Dr. Perricone's 7 Secrets to Beauty, Health, and Longevity: The Miracle of Cellular Rejuvenation, that he subscribes to the benefits of non-laser light therapy for skin rejuvenation, I finally broke down and bought myself a Baby Quasar.

I should mention that Dr. Perricone has developed and briefly sold his own version called Perricone Light Therapy.

When I first researched and wrote this article on Quasar Baby LED Treatments I issued a caution. "Light skin rejuvenation therapies work by wounding tissue beneath the surface and spurring the body's repair mechanisms into action. The repair process needs time to work. Overstress of the repair mechanisms could cause them to fail entirely or work less effectively."

I lumped light-emitting-diode (LED) and intense-pulsed light (IPL) therapy, such as the Baby Quasar uses, in with laser therapy. If Dr. Perricone is correct, I may have to eat my words.

Lasers work by damaging the skin and shifting its natural repair mechanism into high gear. If Dr. Perricone is correct, non-laser light therapy works in an entirely different and entirely beneficial way. This would be truly exciting news for us Age Warriors.

If you've read any of Dr. Perricone's books, you know that he believes inflammation to be at the root of skin aging. In fact, he says inflammation and skin aging "are so intrinsically linked by the processes of both that aging is sometimes described dermatologically as a chronic low grade inflammatory condition."

He continues, "... light therapy, also known as phototherapy, is emerging as an important treatment for aging skin and inflammatory skin diseases such as acne".

He suspects IPL works by combining antibacterial and anti-inflammatory action. This view is supported by a study reported in the August 2006 Journal of Cosmetic and Laser Therapy using light-emitting diode IPL to treat inflammatory acne.

I started using my Baby Quasar every three days at the beginning of September. Though I am at the six-week point where the product manual suggests you change to a maintenance treatment once a month, I plan to continue using it every three days.

Why? I had earlier issued a caution about overuse because the treatment is relatively untested. However based on my own experience and Dr. Perricone's comments on IPL, I am persuaded that it is not only safe for continued use but also beneficial.

My face and neck are firmer and, I think, fuller. Just as importantly, I haven't had any rough areas or breakouts since I started using the Quasar Baby. Friends have started giving me compliments on my "new makeup".

Plus I did a little experiment. A couple of weeks ago, I was bitten by some spiders or other bugs while I slept.

I had bites all along one side of my body. They itched like crazy and got quite inflamed. I tried the usual home remedies including cortisone cream and antihistamines but got little relief. I started treating some of the bites with the Quasar Baby and was very impressed. It definitely had an anti-inflammatory effect.

Since the manual says that the IPL helps creams or serums penetrate into the skin, I have been applying StriVectin-HS Hydro-Thermal Deep Wrinkle Serum to my face and neck before using the Baby Quasar.

You might wonder why I am not using the Baby Quaser every day. It is because one study has concluded that overexposure to LEDs in the red and near-infrared range can cause free radical damage (Photochemical Photobiological Sciences, 2002, 1, 547-552).

P.S. Two readers have posted reviews of Quasar Baby reviews of Quasar Baby. They gave it four and five stars (out of five). We'd love to hear from more of you.
