Topicals and Procedures for All the Conditions That Plague an Aging Neck

I just read in a Prevention article that "the very anti-aging products you use on your face can help your neck look younger too."

That’s right in line with what I told you when I recently sought out my Top Three Neck Cream Picks. In the end, only one of my picks turned out to be a neck cream per se.

With respect to topicals, the Prevention article focused on ingredients rather than product titles like "neck cream" or "night cream" just as I did.

Their advice? [With my notes in brackets. The only anti-aging ingredient category the article neglected to mention is Antioxidants.]

• Apply at least SPF 15 broad spectrum sun protection. Look for avobenzone (a.k.a. Parsol 1789), Helioplex, or Mexoryl. [I recommend SPF 30 or more.]
• To help drive other actives into the skin, look for Retinols or Alpha-Hydroxy Acids. [For greater effect, get a prescription from your derm for Renova or Retin-A.]
• To even out skin tone and lighten age spots, look for ingredients like Kojic Acid and Licorice Extract, but be patient. Prevention cautioned about use of the more potent faster-acting Hydroquinone, as I do. I would only use it under a doctor’s supervision.
• To reduce appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, use Retinols and Peptides. To quote, these ingredients "can build collagen and smooth skin — even reducing the so-called tree-ring lines." [As do Retin-A and Renova.]

Did the term "tree-ring lines" grab your attention as it did mine? I’d never heard that phrase before but, boy, is it descriptive!

This is where the Prevention article really shone.

It delineated different signs of aging which attack our necks in a way I’ve not read elsewhere.

The distinctions clear up some misconceptions which still appear on very large credible health and beauty websites.

Prevention talked about specific targeted procedures for each condition. These gems for your neck are:

• Fractionated laser resurfacing for Tree-Ring Lines;
• Liposuction for Turkey Wattle. That’s the fleshy flap of excess loose skin and fat which can be genetic or due to large or repeated weight fluctuations. If skin is very loose, a neck lift may be indicated as well; and
• Botox for Banding - Banding describes vertical cords which protrude when the thin sheet of muscle running down the neck (the platysma) stretches out of shape. Surgery to tighten the bands is also an option.

Why do I call these procedures "Gems"? Because they quickly make your neck beautifully smooth and youthful again; but they’re also pretty pricey. Just like gem stones ;-)
