Looking Good in Your Sixties

How to Keep Up the Glamour

How to Look Sensational at Sixty

Beauty is youth, or so commercial media would have you believe. But it’s not true.

Beauty can be achieved at any age, and not just because it comes from within.

By taking care of your skin, being fashion conscious, and keeping a fresh but age appropriate hair style, you can be as gorgeous in your sixties as you were in your twenties.

Makeup

By the time you've hit sixty, you've mastered the art of applying makeup.

But are you choosing products that enhance your natural beauty, or are you still using the glittery eye shadow you wore throughout the seventies?

It’s time to take on a new makeup regime, one that complements your natural skin tones and accents your eye color. It's best to avoid anything too sparkly or shiny.

Instead, stick to neutral matte colors, which will make you look more natural. Glittery makeup can settle into the finest lines on your face, drawing attention to creases that can add years to your appearance instead of subtract them.

Darker more intense makeup colors are best left to the young. They do not complement older skin tones very well.

Also be careful about how much makeup you apply. Again thick coats will tend to show off your lines and wrinkles more than they will hide them.

Instead keep your skin supple through exfoliation and moisturizing - this will do a much better job of giving your skin a smooth even tone.

Skin Care

There have been great strides made in the area of antiaging skin care. The use of peptides and new delivery systems enable us to maintain healthy more youthful skin even as we age.

There are also non-invasive cosmetic treatments like Thermage and laser aided collagen replacement to help stem the ravages of time.

Examine your skin care collection.

The cleanser you swore by in your twenties may cause blotchiness in your sixties. The moisturizer that got you through your fifties might not be hydrating your skin well enough, leaving your face dry and even flaky.

Don't be afraid to step outside your comfort zone and try the new products available. Ask friends with similar skin what’s working for them, and then give their products a shot.

Or read our Skin Care Reviews and Comparisons and our insights into Effective Skin Care Ingredients to find products that are best-suited for you today.

Clothing

You're in your sixties now. No more mini skirts and halter tops!

But that doesn't mean you can't dress fashionably.

Your challenge is to find body appropriate clothing that is also age appropriate but makes you look as young as you feel.

If you're thick waisted, look for tunic tops and dresses that skim past the waist.

Bottom heavy? Emphasize your shoulder and chest area with chunky jewelry and empire waist dresses and shirts.

If you’ve got a buxom bosom, emphasize your lower half instead, wearing A-line or fuller skirts.

Try Soft Surroundings for clothing that flatters all ages.

Hair

Any stylist will tell you that a hairstyle is completely dependent on the shape of the face that’s wearing it.

Color, meanwhile, depends on skin tone.

Unless you're one of the fotunate few whose hair doesn't turn dull and wiry as it grays, you’ll want to get started by covering up the dingy gray. If you haven't changed your hairstyle in a while, it may need updating. So go see your favorite hairdresser and get a little advice.

However, don't do anything you're not comfortable with! There’s nothing worse than following the advice of a stylist when it goes against your gut, and then having to suffer through months of regret while you wait for your haircut to grow out or permanent hair color to wash out.

As far as color goes, lighter shades are better. Very dark hair tends to look "off" and does not go well with the experience of age.

Remember that skin tone lightens with age. Trying to maintain the hair color that looked good in your twenties may not be best.

Also you may tend to lose more hair either due to hormonal changes or from damage done over the years.

While there are products that help with hair regrowth, they seem to work best for the young.

Wigs have become less expensive, more comfortable and, most importantly, more realistic looking. Going from thin hair and bald spots to a full head of hair can give rise to some thoughtless comments at first.

But over the longer term, wigs give you styling flexibility, save money you would have spent on hairdressers and hair products and take twenty years off your appearance every time you put one on.
