Home LED Devices

Comparison of Some Top Brands

Hi Jean,

Tanda LED Home System

Thoughts on Various LED Light Therapy Home Devices

How to select a light therapy wand for home use according to your skin concerns.
What are your thoughts about the Tända LED home system? There are 2 different heads - one is red and the other is blue.

The blue Tända Professional Clear Acne Light Therapy Treatment Head uses 414nm blue LED light to kill P.acnes bacteria, helping to cure existing blemishes and prevent further outbreaks.

The Tända Professional Regenerate Anti-Aging Light Therapy Treatment Head uses 660nm red LED light to help improve skin texture, color and tone while diminishing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Is this powerful enough and comparable to others on the market?

The price for a dual kit is about $275.00.

Some kits are with just one head. I am most interested in the red LED, but have seen kits that contain both heads for the same price.

Secondly, I have also seen [a 7-light LED appliance] on ebay and the nm current at least on the red seems to be within the range you suggested in your article. I can't find a brand name.

Your thoughts?

Thank you,

Virginia

Interestingly, the Tända Regenerate cordless and the Evis Beauty MD Platinum LED appliances recently came out on top in a Good Housekeeping Research Institute (GHRI) study of five home LED skin rejuvenation appliances.

However, overall the GHRI concluded that the results were too subtle to justify the high cost of home LED appliances. "While you may get some skin benefits from LED devices, they're expensive and they're time consuming and you'll probably get just as good results from a much less expensive face cream," said Leesa Suzman, Good Housekeeping’s Beauty Director.

Of course that is up to the individual consumer to decide. These appliances last far longer than any jar of face cream.

Personally, I am glad I made the splurge and bought a Baby Quasar two years ago. It’s still going strong... and so am I!

I don’t mind the 20-minute three times a week treatment regimen. In fact, I rather enjoy pampering myself and knowing that I am taking the best possible care of my skin.

Comparison of LED Light Therapy Home Appliances

NASA research thus far has indicated that optimal LED wavelengths for tissue penetration are 680, 730 and 880.

NASA also experimented with different levels of energy to deliver the light. They found that, at 4 joules per square centimeter, DNA synthesis in fibroblasts and muscle cells could be quintupled.

Other research has shown that light in the red and near-infrared wavelengths (630 to 650) stimulate cells to convert food energy into adenosine 5’-triphosphate (ATP) energy.

This is the human version of photosynthesis and cellular respiration. ATP transports energy within the cells for metabolism, cell division and other important processes.

Blue violet light (405 to 420) has long been used to treat acne vulgaris.

Delivered at 320 joules per square centimeter, this wavelength damages and ultimately kills Propionibacterium acnes, the bacterium which causes this type of acne.

Thus the proven and safe therapeutic range for skin rejuvenation is between 630 and 880 nm and dramatic results are obtained at quite low energy levels of 4 joules.

For acne treatment, wavelengths of 405 to 420 nm have long been used in clinical settings.

Note that such acne treatment is delivered at quite a high energy level (320 joules/cm²), while home-use LED wands use only 2 to 4 joules of energy per square centimeter.

Tända Regenerate Red Light

The Tända Red Light appliance uses only one wavelength as you mentioned, i.e. 660 nm. This wavelength has been shown to reduce skin wrinkles.

Baby Quasar

The Baby Quaser (Red) uses:

  • 632 nm orange visible light to smooth fine lines;
  • 650 nm red visible light to reduce wrinkles; and
  • 880-950 nm infrared light (which is beyond the visible spectrum) to erase age spots, reduce redness and even out skin tone. The wand shows a green indicator light for user convenience.

7-Light LED Appliance Sold at the Damchopema eBay Store

I could not determine the brand name of this device either, but at $50 plus S&H I doubt it could match the quality or efficacy of the well-know brands.

Though it delivers seven different wavelengths, only one seems to be in the therapeutic range for skin rejuvenation.

Specifically, the Damchopema model uses:

  • 462 nm blue visible light for acne;
  • 470 nm cyan visible light for relaxation;
  • 527 nm green visible light for "clearing of epidermal pigmented lesion (eg. Lentigines, ephelides, seborrheic keratoses, cafe au lait macule). anti-inflammatory, calming and soothing effect" [I quote the ad because, from my research, I don’t believe it is correct and, in fact, I suspect the seller has likely confused the Baby Quasar green indicator light with visible green.];
  • 590 nm visible "yellow" for improved microcirculation [Again I use quotes because I question the information. 590 nm is deep orange.];
  • 600 nm visible "purple" [600 nm is still deep orange.] for "lymph drainage and toxin excretion";
  • 610 nm visible orange for increased energy and metabolism; and
  • 650 nm visible red to reduce wrinkles
