HairMax LaserCombThe LaserComb Clinically Shown to be Effective in Hair Regrowth for 93% of Men & Women
HairMax LaserComb Home Treatment for Hair LossThe HairMax LaserCombIn a nutshell, it really works and for almost everyone – between 90 and 93% in every clinical study to date.
What is the HairMax LaserComb? To answer that, I should first state that low level laser light has been used to treat hair loss successfully for over 30 years, especially in Europe and Asia. The problem is that the treatment has been available only in clinics. At least weekly visits are required and must be continued for the rest of your life or until you go broke!
The HairMax LaserComb is a device that looks more like a brush with plastic teeth than a comb.
![]() It is called a comb because the objective of the design is to comb remaining hair apart so that the laser light actually reaches the scalp to penetrate and deliver energy to the hair follicles.
How Is the LaserComb Used?First of all, in the privacy of your home and at your convenience. For best results, it should be used three times a week for 10 to 15 minutes. You place the LaserComb flat against your scalp where the hair is thinning, starting at the hairline. Every four seconds the comb will beep, letting you know it is time to move to the next spot. Glide the comb back ½ inch and wait for the next beep. When you get to the back, reverse the process moving forward toward the hairline. Users report it is actually quite relaxing, somewhat like a massage.
How Much Does a LaserComb Cost? It’s not cheap. But if you’re already using hair loss products, add up what they cost you every year. The LaserComb is designed to last for 10 to 15 years when used three times a week as described above. It comes with a one-year warranty. You do the math.
The LaserComb Premium The LaserComb SE Compact version is less expensive at around $395 (with free shipping and handling). In my opinion, the compact version is not worth the savings because treatments take longer and users would be less likely to stick with the regimen as diligently. In addition, the expected useful life of the Compact is about half that of the Premium. The Premium LaserComb has nine laser beams, a 10 to 15-minute treatment time and a 10- to 15-year life span. The Compact has five laser beams, a 15 to 20-minute treatment time and a five- to seven-year life span. [Update 2009: Apparently U.S. consumers agreed with my price-value assessment of the SE compact model. It is no longer available in the States, but you can still find it in Europe should you want a smaller unit for travel or convenience.]
The Dateline Report on the LaserCombIn July of 2005, Dateline NBC concluded a one-year comparison of six hair regrowth treatments, from hair transplant surgery to Minoxidil to the LaserComb. In terms of effectivness, the LaserComb came in second behind surgery. The subject using the LaserComb stated enthusiastically that he would continue to use it. The dermatologist and professor at the University of Miami doing the clinical evaluations, Dr. Paolo Romanelli, said that he measured “substantial” new hair growth over the year and in his opinion, the improvement would continue with further use.
Exactly What Does the FDA Approval of the LaserComb Mean?In January of 2007, Lexington International received FDA approval for its HairMax LaserComb although they had been selling the device for several years. Now Lexington has the additional marketing punch of the FDA’s conclusion that the HairMax LaserComb is safe. In addition, Lexington was given specific permission to use the clinical information presented to the FDA to advertise the product. Lexington’s FDA application stated, “none of the predicate [previously sold] devices deliver laser light to the scalp to promote hair growth. For this reason, Lexington conducted a clinical study of the LaserComb to show that the device functions as intended for its proposed indication without serious side effects.” The company went on to say that, “The clinical data demonstrates that the LaserComb is effective in promoting hair growth and does not present any safety issues.” Their study consisted of a 26-week, placebo-controlled clinical trial carried out in multiple locations. Subjects (all male) were given a LaserComb or ‘sham device’. Hair counts were taken at scheduled intervals. The LaserComb group experienced statistically significant increases in terminal hair density. The placebo group did not. Since that time, Lexington has conducted trials with female subjects as well. The latest six-month study using both men and women between the ages of 30 and 60 showed that 93% of the participants experienced an increase in the thickness of terminal hairs, as well as a significant increase in the number of terminal hairs. The average was 19 new terminal hairs per square centimeter.
