Kerastase Hair Loss TreatmentFormulated to Reduce Scalp ProblemsI just stumbled upon your blog and I love all your wonderful information! I had been doing some research on hair loss. I've been told by a hairdresser that I have short term hair growth, which I think means it hits a certain point and falls out. I am currently taking biotin supplements and I just ordered Kerastase Specifique Bain Prevention shampoo after I read about it on another blog. Do you know anything about it? Thanks, I look forward to reading your blog every day!
Liz I’m so glad you’re enjoying my blog. Thank you. The Kerastase brand is extensive, with lines for every type of hair and hair problem. I couldn’t find a bottle of Kerastase Specifique Bain Prevention Shampoo in any salons in my area but, since you’ve already ordered it, why don’t you send me a copy of the ingredient list so I can take a closer look? After finishing the bottle, I’d be very interested to know what you think of the product. There are soooo many women and men who share your problem. By searching the U.S. Patent database, I found a few interesting items about L’Oreal’s research into hair loss. In 1995, L’Oreal was granted a patent on a group of compositions for slowing down hair loss and for inducing and stimulating hair growth, based on two 4-diamino-pyrimidine 3-oxide derivatives, and two 4-diaminopyrimidine 3-oxide derivatives. In their patent application, the company presented 16 supporting claims including results of clinical studies. I suspect these compounds might be the active ingredients in Specifique Bain Prevention. The company says Kerastase Specifique Bain Prevention Shampoo is specially formulated to help reduce temporary or prolonged scalp problems, minimizes risk of hair loss, promote the growth of healthy hair and provide proper balance to the scalp. To me, the words sound very similar to those in its patent application. L’Oreal is not resting on its laurels. The company’s Vichy Division recently launched a product named Dercos (shampoo and ampoules) containing the active ingredient Aminexil (Diaminopyrimidine Oxide). Dercos is designed to fight hair loss due to inflammation triggered by a microflora of bacteria found on the scalp of some balding men and women. These bacteria cause accelerated aging of the hair roots characterized by their stiffening. This causes the roots to become rigid and compress the blood vessels that nourish and stimulate them. The roots weaken, and the hair falls out prematurely. [Next the company is searching for a cure for gray hair, which I find very interesting given that L’Oreal is one of the largest producers of hair color. I guess they reason, that if they don’t develop it themselves, some other company will beat them to the punch.]
Genetic BaldingIf your short term hair growth is inherited, the current wisdom is that it is caused by sensitivity to DHT (Dihydrotestosterone).DHT is believed to shorten the growth, or anagen, phase of the hair cycle, causing miniaturization of the follicles, and producing progressively finer hairs. The production of DHT is regulated by an enzyme called 5-alpha reductase. There are several treatment products that are somewhat successful in preventing DHT from attaching to the hair follicles. Minoxiidil and Active Copper are the most popular. Read more about hair loss – its causes and treatments.
Hi Jean Well, here's an early update. I have been using Kerastase Specifique Bain Prevention by L'Oreal for a few weeks now and so far I love it. I usually like to switch up my shampoos but I have been reaching for it every time. (I don't usually shampoo my hair everyday, though.) I love the way it gets my hair really clean without stripping it. For weeks now my hair is softer and bouncier since it's even less dry. Now as far as it slowing my hair loss, I believe I am "shedding" a bit less, and it's winter. Today, I thought for the first time in a long time that I might actually get my hair to a longer length (just past my shoulders) without it looking too sparse. Bottom-line: I am happy and I will continue to use it and I definitely recommend it. I found it on Amazon.com. From Brazil? Ingredients: aqua - sodium laureth Sulfate - laureth 5 - carboxylic acid - cocamide mipa - ceteareth 60 myristyl glycol - sodium chloride - hexylene glycol - sodium hydroxide - sodium methylparaban - piroctone olamine - polyquaternium 10 - triclosan - glycyrrhetinic acid - dmdm hydantoin - linalool - citronellol - parfum I will be very interested in what you think. Thanks,
Liz I’m so glad to hear the Kerastase Prevention is working for you. Thank you for sending the ingredient list. Prevention does, in fact, contain one of the patented compounds for slowing hair loss and for inducing and stimulating hair growth which I mentioned earlier. Piroctone Olamine is a synonym for 1-Hydroxy-4-methyl-6(2,4,4-trimethylpentyl)2-pyridon, an oxide derivative of pyrimidine. The Polyquaternium 10 is likely what accounts for the improved condition of your hair – less dry, softer and bouncier. Triclosan is a potent wide spectrum antibacterial and antifungal agent. So to the extent that your short-term hair growth may be exacerbated by microrganisms, Triclosan would be very beneficial. Finally, if you have any concern over the inclusion of Sodium Laureth Sulfate in Prevention, based on some of the bunk floating around the Internet, please read this article on hair regrowth ingredients.
