As we age, maintaining our crowning glory becomes more and more of a challenge. Hormonal changes, genetic predispositions, environmental and other stressors like hair teasing, heat and harsh chemicals all take their toll.

Whether you provide your hair its nourishment through diet alone or with supplements as well, here are some basics your hair cries out for:

  • Omega-3 Fatty Acids found in salmon, flaxseed, supplements, walnuts and other nuts;
  • Vitamins A and C found in dark green vegetables like spinach and broccoli, as well as in carrots and multivitamins;
  • Legumes like beans and lentils for protein, iron, zinc and especially biotin;
  • Nuts for the trace mineral selenium, more Omega-3s and zinc;
  • High quality protein as found in poultry, salmon and eggs;
  • Vitamin B-12 from eggs and salmon;
  • Whole grains, nuts, beef, lamb and oysters for hair-healthy minerals and vitamins; and
  • Calcium from low fat dairy products like skim milk, yogurt and low-fat cheeses.

If that sounds similar to all the advice you hear about an overall healthy diet, I think you're onto something! Eat a balanced diet which is good for your body in general and you will also be nourishing your hair.

Starve or neglect your body's nutritional needs and you are also abusing your hair. Aim for a balanced diet of lean protein, fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, fatty fish and low-fat dairy.

Guess what? That's exactly what the Mediterranean (or Sonoma) diet provides. No fad diets; no crash or detox diets; just a healthy balanced diet for life (and for healthy hair).
