Modern Hair Removal TechniquesHigh Tech Cosmetic Hair Removal Procedureshairs in places we never had them before and where we don’t want them now. Of course, most women start fighting the battle against hair when they are teenagers and so are much more comfortable with some of the newer hair removal techniques. Men don't have the innate knowledge women do and face new challenges when hairs start spouting out of their ears and nose. There are several common ways to rid the body of unwanted hair. Some are more permanent than others and some are more versatile, so that hair in sensitive areas can be removed without too much pain. They all work equally well on men and women.
Common Hair Removal TechniquesShavingThe most common hair removal technique is shaving, but everyone knows that is just a temporary solution. The hair will grow back quickly. On men, facial hair growth can be visible within hours. Women don’t have to shave their legs every day, although new hairs will be visible within days.
Depilatory CreamsThere are also depilatory creams, which can be used on wide areas of the body at once. They have been improved, smell better and do the job, but again just provide a temporary solution.More permanent hair removal is achieved by electrolysis, epilation in the sense of ripping the hair out by the roots through mechanical means and laser hair removal.
ElectrolysisElectrolysis has been around for ages. A small electrically charged needle is inserted into the hair follicle. The electric charge kills the hair.Electrolysis can be painful when used in sensitive areas or when large areas are done at once, since only one hair root can be removed at a time. The procedure is performed over several sessions. Since all active hair follicles are not in the same stage of growth, only a portion will be visible above the skin’s surface at any given time. The visible hairs are the only ones that can be removed. The results are permanent. There can be some soreness after an electrolysis session, but it usually passes quickly. Soothing creams can help relieve the pain and moisturize the treated areas.
EpilationThe most common epilation methods are tweezering either done one hair at a time with a tweezers or covering wider areas using little machines designed for the purpose. The only difference between the two is speed. Pain can be another story.Since the original EpiLady these machines have become more effective and less painful. At least one brand incorporates a cooling device to ease the pain. Other brands use smaller heads that can be used on the lips and in the bikini area. Depending how much area you cover in a session, the skin can be red and sore for a while. You can use calming creams to reduce the aftereffects. You need to go over treated areas several times as new hairs grow in. They should be thinner, sparser and less painful to remove.
WaxingThe other common epilation method is waxing, of which there are several different kinds. Waxing is effective over larger areas, but again can be painful and leave the skin red and sore. The aftereffects are temporary and can be treated with a soothing skin cream. Waxing is one of the longer-lasting temporary hair removal methods, lasting up to two months. The results leave the skin feeling smooth. Waxing can be done at home or in salons. You can use either hot or cold wax or wax strips. They all work the same, by removing the hair by its roots. The application is different, with warm wax and the strips being the easiest to work with. You apply the wax to the area to be treated, let it cool if necessary and then pull the wax away quickly against the grain or growth pattern. (If you think this sounds easy, read A Waxing Nightmare.) This can be painful and can leave the skin red and blotchy. Some of the pain can be alleviated by cutting the hairs to be waxed short – for longer hairs on the back or in the pubic area - and applying talcum powder before the wax is applied. Subsequent treatments should be less painful, since new hairs should be thinner and sparse.
Laser Hair RemovalAfter years of trial and error, doctors think they have found a fast, safe and relatively painless way to permanently remove hair, even in sensitive areas.Using properly tuned lasers, either individual hairs or large areas can be removed quickly. The laser kills the roots with heat. Proponents claim it can be used on any part of the body, including the pubic areas, without more than a little warming sensation. However, there can be problems with skin discoloration, inability to tan and possibly even scarring from improper use of a laser. It would make more sense to leave this procedure to a skilled plastic surgeon rather than a salon employee. Also some call into question the permanency of the treatment although it does seem to last for years. Multiple sessions are needed as new hairs grow in. You might feel a slight burning effect, similar to a sunburn, after the treatment and your skin will be sensitive to light, maybe permanently, so you should always use sun block for treated areas that will be exposed to the sun. Laser treatment will undoubtedly be the most expensive of these options. We seem to be in an era where body hair is out of fashion. If you want to join the trend, these are the ways to achieve the results you are looking for.
