Very Dry Skin Care

Caring for Dry Skin

Hello,

First, I just want to thank you for your site. It is very informative and the fact you emphasize ingredients over products is great and adds to the overall credibility of your site.

Unfortunately, I found it after failed attempts to do my own research on the web (most sites are really ad sites disguised as review sites) and then a fairly expensive visit to an esthetician.

If you have time, I would like to get your opinion of the regime I am currently using. I am a 45 y/o male and, because of infantile eczema, have used skin products my entire life. Given this, I don’t have the same “squeamishness” about using skin care that many of my male friends have.

That said, I decided to step up my daily routine to include some of the more modern products available.

In the past I have stuck to a clean, tone, moisturize regime with a lactic acid based body lotion (Lac-Hydrin now available without prescription as AmLactin).

You may want to let your readers know about this. It is a great body lotion for people with extremely dry skin). I tried Lifecell but found it lacking and pretty much a bunch of hype.

My current regime, as recommended by a very nice and helpful esthetician is as follows:

AM

Cleanse
Alternate daily between Skinceuticals C+E Ferulic and Remergent DNA Repair (wait a few minutes)

Peter Thomas RothUnWrinkle (wait a few minutes)
Moisturize (I generally use whatever is on sale. Right now it is Aveeno Calming with SPF)

PM

Cleanse
Skinceuticals Pure Retinol (wait ½ hour)
Peter Thomas Roth Un Wrinkle (wait ½ hour)
Kinerase Under Eye Rescue Moisturize

This sounds more complicated than it really is. All these products are supposedly top of the line and all have a price tag to match. I don’t mind paying for the products if they work and are not competing with or duplicating each other.

Although my skin is dry, it is not sensitive so I have not had any breakouts or excessive redness even though I was warned that these creams can be pretty harsh.

I would really appreciate your opinion regarding these products and how I am using them. Thanks for your time and again, great site!

Best,

Chad

Thank you for your kind comments about Ageless-Beauty.

I am very impressed. You and/or your esthetician have put together a wonderful skin anti-aging program.

I thank you for the information on AmLactin moisturizing lotion for very dry skin. You’ve already told my readers about it, by way of your letter; but I am researching and will publish a full report ASAP.

I had not heard of Remergent DNA Repair and, from the little I’ve read after receiving your letter, I think you’re really onto something great here. Again I will be publishing a full report soon.

Since you’re familiar with Ageless-Beauty, you may already know thatPeter Thomas Roth UnWrinkle has topped my list of the best skin anti-aging products for two years. I am in the process or updating my top ten lists and at this point PTR UnWrinkle still holds the top spot. Read more here.

You’re using Skinceuticals C+E Ferulic which is not on my currently posted top ten but is slated for the updated list. See my review here.

Skinceuticals Pure Retinol is an excellent choice for exfoliation.

Though it doesn’t show up on my top ten list because it is a special use product, I’ve written very positive reviews of Kinerase Under Eye Rescue for undereye circles and puffiness.

I love your comment that, “This sounds more complicated than it really is.” I agree with you completely. Once your skin care regime becomes a matter of routine, you don’t even think twice about it. Protecting your skin from the ravages of time is a matter of health, not simply vanity.

That’s why I wrote this article, Step Up Your Skin Care.

After reading it, you can see that your program addresses every step of anti-aging skin care with the finest products currently available … except ….

In my opinion, your program falls short in only one respect – sun protection. Dermatologists will tell you that 80% of skin photoaging is due to UV exposure. Therefore broad spectrum sun protection is absolutely the most essential step of skin care.

While Aveeno Ultra-Calming Moisturizer with SPF 15 is a fine product, especially for sensitive skin, it only provides protection against the sun’s UVA rays which cause pigment changes. It is the sun’s UVB rays which damage the skin’s DNA, cause photoaging and even cancer.

Here is an article about protecting your skin against the sun’s UVB rays.

Chad, if I needed another staff writer or researcher on skin anti-aging, I would be sending you a job application! Thank you for writing.

Jean,

Thank you so much for your detailed and very helpful response. I am sure you receive many requests for information so I am grateful for the time you must have spent answering my question.

I will take your advice and add a separate moisturizer and sunscreen.

The Neutrogena product you recommend sounds good to me. Once you pointed out the inadequacies of my sun protection it hit me that if I am going to spend the big bucks on a high quality skin care, to skimp on a good moisturizer and sunscreen seems completely nuts!

As for the job, I am becoming something of an aficionado regarding the skin care thing so just let me know LOL. Again, thanks for your time and effort.

Best,

Chad
