Cosmetic Safety: Sorting Out Myth from Reality

Cosmetic Safety: Sorting Out Myth from Reality

How can you tell your cosmetics are safe?

Hi, I've been searching on info about cosmetics that contain mercury and/or lead.

I've heard that MAC contains mercury and some shades of their lipsticks contain lead?

I just want to make sure whether it's real or just a hoax; I can't seem to find anything about it on the internet.

What about mineral makeups? Are they safe to use?

Thanks!

Carlee

I like your approach - one of caution, but not so gullible as to believe everything you read.

I actually have articles on Ageless Beautyto answer each of your questions.

Myth #1: MAC Cosmetics Contain Mercury

This Internet hoax or truth-twisting resurfaces every so often, usually with a different brand name each time.

No reputable cosmetic line has been found to contain mercury.

However, mercury is occasionally found in cosmetics sold in the United States.

Read the details and how to avoid Mercury in Cosmetics here.

Myth #2: Some Major Lipstick Brands Contain Lead

There is a tiny bit of truth to this one; but again there is a bit of truth-twisting as well.

Manufacturers do not intentionally put lead in your lipstick. It is a contaminant associated with certain dyes and is occasionally present in miniscule amounts.

In Cosmetics Cop Paula Begoun's words, "If you're concerned about lead exposure, you'd be much better off having your home's paint, soil, and water supply tested than opening your makeup bag in fear that adding color to lips will spell certain doom."

Read more about Lead in Lipstick here.

Myth #3: Mineral Makeup is Safer and More Natural

Mineral makeup formulas are quite simple and, from that perspective, less likely to irritate very sensitive skin. However it is not fair to say they are safer or more natural.

This is a case of misleading marketing by the companies that make mineral makeup. Read more about Mineral Makeup here.
