Avon Laser Clinical Review

The Inside Scoop on Avon Anew Clinical Two-Step Laser System

Avon recently launched two new products in its Clinical antiaging treatment line: Anew Clinical Laser System (apparently no longer available and replaced with Anew Clinical Spider Vein Therapy SPF 15 UVA/UVB) and Anew Clinical Lift & Tuck icon for the body.

Here we have gathered some preliminary anecdotal reports on the Clinical Laser System, as well as reveal what may be the “secret ingredients” behind Avon’s “exclusive Triple Pulse Technology”.

Avon promises its “laser” system targets and corrects the appearance of dark spots, mild redness and broken capillaries with “laser-like precision” to address the “signs that go beyond the lines and wrinkles” of aging.

It costs $32, the same as Clinical Cream and the Deep Crease Concentrate.

I ordered mine as soon as I saw the first magazine ad and also asked my Avon representative to have other purchasers contact me if they would like to share their experiences. In Avon’s own studies, 77% of users noted the improvements promised to some extent.

What Causes Skin Discoloration and What Could Possibly Correct It?

To consider how Clinical Laser might work it is helpful to understand why the dark spots, mild redness and broken capillaries appear on our skin as we age. These ugly spots and spidery veins, technically known as Telangiectasias, are caused by chronic dilation and weakness of the capillary vessels brought on by years of pressure from venous blood flow.

As capillaries age and suffer free radical damage, they simply lose their elasticity and remain distended. You often hear them referred to as broken capillaries.

However they’re not broken in pieces. They’re only “broken” in the sense that they no longer contract. Loss of capillary elasticity is accelerated by UV exposure, excessive alcohol consumption and systemic conditions such as erythrosis and rosacea.

It is well established that certain chemicals fight and protect against oxidative damage whether brought on by UV exposure or by free radicals released in the body’s own chemical processes.

The ingredient list reveals that to fight and protect is the line of attack Avon chose for Clinical Laser. The fight is waged with antioxidants and anti-inflammatories. The protection comes in the form of a high SPF cream.

The product comes in two parts: a thin roller ball tube containing the treatment lotion and a squeeze tube of Post-Laser Protection Lotion with SPF 30.

The treatment lotion is chock full of powerful antioxidants and anti-inflammatory ingredients. The antioxidants prevent further free radical damage and allow the body to repair previous free radical damage. Anti-inflammatory ingredients soothe and reduce inflammation and redness.

What is unique about Clinical Laser is the inclusion of three curcumin-derived ingredients: demethoxycurcumin, bisdemethoxycurcumin and tetrahydrocurcumin (T Curcumin). Could this be the Triple Pulse Technology Avon refers to?

Curcumin comes from the spice, tumeric, used in Indian curry and has been used medicinally for centuries. The curcumin derivatives are currently under study for their (cancerous) tumor inhibiting power.

T Curcumin is reportedly a more powerful antioxidant than any of the E vitamins. Curcuminoids are proven to have a dual-pronged mechanism of antioxidant action. They inhibit the formation as well as the propagation of free radicals.

The list of anti-inflammatory ingredients is long, exotic and state-of-the-art: mangostin fruit extract from the ultra-tropical mangosteen tree; bisabolol, a chamomile derivative; licorice which is often used as a skin lightener; and rosemary extract which is commonly used to treat bruises.

Results of Survey of Avon's Clinical Laser System and Anew Clinical Lift & Tuck

Three of our six survey participants experienced a mild tingling sensation which dissipated quickly. Since the package directions warn of this, we knew it was just the product working rather than an allergic reaction.

Only one of the six respondents had an allergic reaction. She experienced a metallic taste and tongue numbness whenever she tried to use the treatment lotion.

When she contacted the company, Avon apologized for her adverse reaction and advised her to stop treatment. She was quite disappointed because after only three days of use, she noticed less redness on her face.

The most convincing comments of the product’s efficacy came from a woman who has rosacea which causes her face to appear as if she is always blushing. She reported results after a month of use and estimated that her rosacea improved about 60%. Needless to say, she is delighted. She no longer needs to use green corrective concealer covered by a heavy mask-like foundation.

Three other users reported that the spider veins around the nostrils were significantly fainter after three to four weeks. One commented that the treatment lotion goes a long way. After a month, she has only used about a third.

It’s nice to know your investment should last about three months. The roller ball applicator means there’s no wasted excess lotion in the palm of your hand or on a cotton ball.

Only one of the six testers could not see any improvement. One user complained that the SPF Post-Laser Protection Lotion is overscented. Finally, one woman tried the treatment on her leg spider veins reasoning that since it worked on her face, maybe … However after two weeks she sees no improvement there.

She plans to continue her experiment and will update us in a few weeks. It does stand to reason that, if Clinical Laser diminishes facial spider veins, it might work on the same condition elsewhere on the body.

I can think of at least one reason why it might not. The capillary veins in the leg work the hardest of all since they have to pump blood against gravity up to the heart. Therefore they’ve probably suffered more free radical damage and may be beyond repair. However, time will tell!
