When to Start Using Anti-Aging Skin Creams
Not Everyone Should Use Anti-Aging Skin Creams
Didn't I Just Say That?
You know, sometimes I feel like the mainstream media are following my blog and website for new article ideas. LOL.
For a couple of months I have been writing more frequently to caution younger readers against using anti-aging skin creams (except for sun protection) until their skin really needs them.
Just last week I wrote, "The skin can get too much of a good thing"; and anti-aging ingredients "are wasted if the body can't incorporate them ... they can overload the system causing breakouts or changes in skin tone. This is why I caution people not to use peptides before their skin needs repair (of wrinkles, thinning skin, wounds, etc.)."
Then I saw an article in the New York Daily News on just this topic.
It quoted dermatologist Dr. Susan Mayou to say, "Teenagers using a heavy [antiaging cream] product could suffer from ... occlusive folliculitis."
That's Latin for "clogged pores" and exactly what I warned my young reader about.
I've been advising against this trend for a couple of years and am glad that medical professionals are starting to weigh in on the topic.
Surveys reveal that over one-third of women under 25 regularly use anti-aging skin care products formulated for us Age Warriors (over 40).
I had written about cosmeceutical anti-aging skin creams clogging pores and causing breakouts on young skin.
Such young skin normally doesn't yet need a lot of added moisture or skin-rebuilding peptides. But I hadn't directly addressed the other skin issue that can arise.
Dr. Mayou spoke out against the premature use of exfoliants (retinoids and alpha/beta-hydroxy acids). In her professional opinion, they can actually accelerate skin aging in young skin.
Chemical exfoliants are beneficial only after a drop in hormones slows the skin-rebuilding process.
So I say to all you youthful teens and 20-somethings with vibrant, moist, plump skin: Keep your hands off our anti-aging skin creams.
We'll welcome you to our Age Warrior ranks in 20 or 30 years. In the meantime, enjoy your Youthful Beauty.
