SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic Serum
SkinCeuticals Boosts the Antioxidant Power of Its C & E Serum with Ferulic Acid
At first I was dismayed when I could no longer find SkinCeuticals C E antioxidant serum.
Then I discovered the company has improved on this powerful formula with the addition of Ferulic Acid (FA).
I admit I knew little about Ferulic Acid, so I had to go digging around and found some fascinating stats and studies. FA is a plant-derived phenol with antioxidant properties.
In vivo (in animals) and in vitro studies suggest that FA has direct anti-tumor activity against breast and liver cancer by selectively causing the death of cancerous cells. FA has also been shown to prevent several known carcinogens from causing cancer.
More to the point for anti-aging skin care, a study reported in the October 2005 Journal of Investigative Dermatology, found that FA stabilizes a solution of vitamins C and E and doubles their power to protect the skin from photoaging. That explains why SkinCeuticals has added FA to its new improved antioxidant serum.
A 2007 study at Duke University Medical center funded by L'Oreal (which acquired SkinCeuticals in 2005) demonstrated that topical application of FA combined with vitamins C and E protects skin from UVA damage.
The addition of FA improved the stability and doubled the antioxidant power of the vitamin C and E combination. With the addition of FA's own antioxidant power, the total improvement is an eight times increase!
Why are Topical Antioxidants so Important for the Skin?
SkinCeuticals explains why topical antioxidants are so important for the skin more succinctly than I can. To quote from the company website ...
"Skincare research shows that aging skin is the result of more than just years on the calendar. Exposure to environmental elements like sunlight, smoke, and air pollution causes photoaging in skin. Not only does this lead to the formation of lines, wrinkles, and pigmentation - it can lead to more serious skin conditions, including skin cancer.
A comprehensive antioxidant program can help prevent photoaging and the onset of more serious skin conditions. Topical antioxidants have now been shown to provide up to eight times the skin's natural protection from UV damage.
Sunscreens are also an important part of the prevention process, although they cannot do it alone. Antioxidants protect your skin from the sun in ways that sunscreens can't.
When used together, antioxidants and sunscreens provide almost complete photoprotection - preventing photoaging, preventing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and promoting good skin health."
